Letters for youth: Each Discovery Weekend, youth receive a package of letters written by family, friends, and church members as encouragement and support in their spiritual journey. Parents can help out by identifying a few important people in your youth's life and asking them to write a letter. Mary Elizabeth Neal will be collecting letters throughout January. How much does the weekend cost? $100 per youth. Checks may be made to Highlands UMC with "Discovery" in the memo line and dropped in the offering plate, mailed to the church office at 1045 20th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35205, or hand delivered with your youth when the arrive for the weekend.
May my child leave the weekend for a sporting event/family obligation/etc. and return at a later time? May my child arrive for the weekend on Saturday morning? Yes, however due to the full weekend schedule it is highly discouraged. If your child must arrive late or leave and return, a parent or guardian must provide transportation.
Will youth have access to their cell phones during the weekend? During the weekend, one of our goals is to build community with all the youth away from the normal distractions that they encounter each day. As such, we would prefer that cell phones, tablets, and other electronic devices be left at home. Electronic devices that are brought to the weekend will be collected and stored in a secure location. Cell service and wifi connections are extremely limited at Camp Sumantanga.
Can my child bring friends? YES, absolutely! Please have their friends' parents register them below.
What does my child need for the weekend? Packing list will be sent closer to weekend.
