Sunday School Classes
Explorers Class
This class is composed of adults who are social-justice minded and have a passion to see the gospel lived-out in our community. Class discussions range from Biblical studies to current day theological matters. Most of the class has joined the church in the past 5 to 8 years, and members range in age to late 20s to early 50s. All are welcome to join us on the second floor of the Education Building at the far end of the hall in Room E220. We also have fellowship and service opportunities. Matthew Penfield leads the class.
Cornerstone Class
The Cornerstone Class is an adult class that enjoys discussion of various topics. Recently we have done a study on Paul that covered the history of his time and then followed his ministry. This fall we will begin the book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. Leigh Inskeep will lead us through this study. We rotate teachers and welcome all. The age of our class is the thirty to forty year range but welcome any age. The Cornerstone Class meets in room E217. Cynthia Brennan is the class teacher.
New Class
The New Class derives its name from II Corinthians 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, he or she is a new creation, the old has gone; the new has come.” Taught by Bill Clark, the New Class seeks to discern God’s will for each of us by listening for God in all that we do, and through the study of books of the Bible and other books related to living the Christian life. Although primarily composed of middle-aged adults, both married and single, all are welcome. The New Class regularly shares homemade baked goods and coffee during their fellowship time, and meets on the second floor of the Education Building in Room E210. The New Class is studying "Invitation to the Old Testament" which is timely given the conflict in the Middle East. We are trying to better understand God's role in the lives and history of the Jewish people both then and now, and how it affects us today. Bill Clark teaches the New Class
Community Sunday School
Taught by Walter Rush, the Community Sunday School Class is one of our Sunday options for the men and women who attend our Community Ministries program which is closed on Sundays. This class meets in room S300 which is at the top of the stairs between the sanctuary and Greeting Space. This class is designed to offer the gospel to those who may be new to the church or unfamiliar with the Christian faith.
Upper Room Class
This class of adults in their forties and fifties reads and studies the Bible and other faith-based books. Emphasizing how one lives out the Christian Life, the class offers good discussion and fellowship for its members and visitors, and meets on the second floor of the Education Building in Room E209. Red Berry Class
Lively discussion is the hallmark of the Red Berry Class. Led by members of the class, this class delves deep into the Bible employing philosophical, historical and spiritual resources to aid in study. The Red Berry Class meets on the second floor of the Education Building in Room E204. Twice each year the class meets offsite for a “Breakfast in the Woods” at the home of Bitty Mason. Please contact Bill Satterfield to learn more about the class.
Marvin Williams Class
Our largest Sunday School class is the Marvin Williams Class, which meets just off the Sanctuary near the 11th Avenue entrance. Started as a couples class following the Second World War, this class is now composed of both couple and single adults. Lively singing from the Cokesbury Hymnal begins each class. The class uses the Adult Bible Studies published by the United Methodist Church based on the International Lesson Series. This lecture style class is taught by Janet Holt, Bill Hairston and others.
