Welcome to Highlands

“Welcome to Highlands” is a phrase that you are likely to hear a lot around Highlands United Methodist Church.  Often it is uttered with a slight grin and shaking of the head meaning “Well, that is something that could only happen around here,” owning to our unique location in the heart of Five Points South in Birmingham, Alabama, and the variety of characters than make up our church family.  But first and foremost, “Welcome to Highlands” means that you are welcome at Highlands.

In fact, everyone is welcome at Highlands United Methodist Church and we mean it:  young and old, progressive and conservative, haves and have nots, gay and straight, black and white, those quite certain and those questioning, the uptight and the out-of-sight. All are welcome; there is a place for everyone at Highlands. We rejoice in the fact that God’s love and grace are larger than any differences we have. Here, we strive to love God and to serve our neighbors. This starts with our emphasis on excellent, liturgical worship. We still sing from hymnals and appreciate organ music. We have an outstanding choir; strong, insightful preaching; and traditional, meaningful liturgy.

Four days a week we serve breakfast to the poor and homeless of our Southside community through our Community Ministries, offering a message of hope and a respite for those living on the streets.  We provide regular opportunities for spiritual growth through Bible studies, book discussions, and outside speakers through our Growing Ministries.  We value and offer a variety of growing opportunities to nurture and care for our children and youth.

So Welcome to Highlands!  We are glad that you are here and hope you will visit with us soon.
