Welcome to Highlands UMC

Music at Highlands

The purpose of the Choir is to offer praises to God through leadership in music and liturgy in worship. The Choir of Highlands is part of a tradition that extends back to the early nineteen hundreds, when Highlands was founded.

Music in worship draws from many styles. On any given Sunday, the Choir may sing a plainsong chant from the earliest centuries of the church, a Renaissance motet by Palestrina or Byrd, an anthem from the Baroque era, or music composed during recent years and up to the present day.

In the worship at Highlands, the Choir assumes a major role as a leader in the services through the singing of hymns, anthems, canticles, psalms, communion and baptism responses.  The Choir is accompanied by the church’s Möller pipe organ. During special celebrations, such as All Saints’ Day, Advent, Christmas Eve, Lent and Easter, members of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra are used to enhance the music ministry of Highlands.

The Choir is open to membership. A simple audition is required to join. Reading music is a plus but not a requirement.  If you are interested in participating in the Choir, please see Rick Phillips, Organist and Director of Music. The Choir rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at 6:30p.m.
