At Highlands United Methodist Church, our Child Development Center is one of our most important ministries. The Highlands Child Development Center is a family-oriented center for children ranging in age from 6 weeks to 4 years. The center endeavors to have an open and inclusive program designed to meet the needs of both church and community members. We are licensed by the Alabama Department of Human Resources and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Child Development Center is open from 7 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday.

The staff of Highlands’ Child Development Center is dedicated to a child-centered approach to education and care-giving. HCDC implements a creative curriculum where interaction and learning are designed to encourage the child’s development in the areas of social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills. Our children learn through play! HCDC is a high-quality early childhood program, which provides a safe and nurturing environment where children can bloom and grow.

Purpose

Highlands Child Development Center is a faith-based ministry of Highlands United Methodist Church located in Birmingham, Alabama. The Child Development Center strives to provide a program which is inclusive, culturally diverse, and designed to meet the needs of church members and the community.

Consistent with the Mission Statement of Highlands United Methodist Church, the goal of Highlands Child Development Center is to be a place where:

  • all families are welcomed, valued, and encouraged to be part of community.

  • children experience and learn to share the love of God with others in a cooperative spirit of concern for others and the world in which they live.

  • children are encouraged to discover their God-given gifts.

Our Standards and Accreditation

The Highlands United Methodist Church Child Development Center strives to offer the most professional educational environment with the highest standards for the children in our care. To that end, we are licensed by the Alabama Department of Human Resources and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.  Early childhood programs accredited by the NAEYC Academy for Early Childhood Program Accreditation have voluntarily undergone a comprehensive process of internal self-study and improvement.  NAEYC-accedited programs promote quality by meeting the 10 NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards, which are based on the latest research on the education and development of young children.

Parental Involvement

The Highlands United Methodist Church Child Development Center encourages parental partnership through numerous opportunities such as being a Room Parent, serving on the Parent Council, serving as a Board Member, participating in our fundraisers, and more.
We would be privileged for you to trust us with God’s most precious gift to you! We encourage interested parents or guardians to visit during one of our monthly tours.
