Youth Ministries at Highlands
At Highlands, we strive to provide our young people a supportive place to learn, grow, and serve together! Youth Ministries include weekly Sunday school, bi-monthly youth group meetings, regular service projects that support our Community Ministries, spiritual formation retreats, and more! Youth Sunday School
Our Youth Sunday School Class is open to all youth in 6th grade or older and meets each week in Room 204 on the second floor of the Education Building. The curriculum includes Old and New Testament Bible study, discussion of current events and topical issues, and Jeopardy-style Bible Trivia.
Youth Sunday School is taught by Danny and Michele Jones during the school year. During the summer months, the youth class is taught by Rev. Henry Gibson and a rotating schedule of guest teachers, including parents, Highlands members and staff.
Highlands partners with the youth groups of East Lake, Avondale, Woodlawn, and St. Junia UMCs and Beloved Community Church to form a cooperative youth ministry program - Birmingham Cooperative Youth Ministries. This diverse group of youth and adult volunteers meets several times a month to socialize, share group-building experiences, and explore and deepen our faith together. Together with our partner churches, Highlands youth participate in Discovery Weekend – an annual spiritual formation retreat, ongoing service projects, and Starting Points – a collaborative Confirmation Class.
Youth Group meets the first, third, and fifth Sunday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at each of the participating churches on a rotating basis. See our event's calendar below for the next meeting date and location.
Discovery Weekend Planning Retreat
October 5-6, 2019
All 9th-12th grade youth are invited to a Discovery Weekend planning retreat October 5-6, 2019. Youth will develop our theme and D-group materials, plan talk topics and assign presenters, and prepare for their leadership responsibilities during Discovery Weekend. It is very important that senior high youth who plan to attend and lead during Discovery take part in this planning retreat. (We, of course, understand if schedules do not allow!) Planning retreat will take place at Camp Sumatanga. A suggested donation of $25/youth will help cover the cost of lodging. Please register no later than September 30.
Upcoming Youth Events
