Manna and Mercy Summer Sunday School

  • Highlands United Methodist Church 1045 20th Street South Birmingham, AL, 35205 (map)

Join us each Sunday this summer at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall for in-person adult Sunday School using the book Manna and Mercy by Dan Erlander. The class will also live-stream on Facebook. Youth Sunday school will follow the same text at the same time, but will meet in the Youth Room. All are welcome and invited.

We will be using the clever Manna and Mercy, a graphic novel way ahead of its time, that utilizes dynamic artwork and profound prose to tell the story of the Bible in a condensed form. We will explore themes of God’s people that appear again and again throughout scripture - exile and return, sharing and becoming selfish, trusting and wandering away. Through our study you will see the golden thread of God’s love, mercy, and grace throughout Old and New  Testaments.

By the time we finish studying Manna and Mercy, the Bible will make more sense to you. You will notice how the Wilderness School of the Exodus people connects to the Wilderness School that Jesus encountered at the start of his ministry. You will witness how the cycle of God’s people falling apart, yet maintaining a remnant of faithfulness, repeats itself again and again. You will see that the end of the story (never really the end, of course) circles back to God's love from the very beginning of the story. We will witness God's vision, God’s challenges, and God’s perseverance. We will explore the Bible as a story of friendship, passion, promise, disappointment, hope, and love. We will come to understand the Bible as God’s story of mending the universe.
